Kelly Durian Obituar, Death – On January 12, 2023, Kelly Durian, age 76, from Iowa City, Iowa, died away peacefully at her home, surrounded by her devoted family.
Sue Paul’s birthday is July 5th, and she was born in Fairfield, Iowa, to parents named Doyle and Nellie (Rubey) Paul. She spent her childhood in the Brighton region, where her family had a farm, and attended high school in the nearby town of Fairfield, Iowa.
She graduated in 1961. In 1961, she accepted a position with the University of Iowa Residence Services, which required her to relocate to Iowa City. Fred Durian, the man she has been married to for the past 57 years, was the man she met and wed in Iowa City. Sue and Fred were wonderful parents and grandparents to their two children, Denise and Kelly, and were blessed with two more grandchildren.
After the birth of her children, Sue found employment as a secretary with the Iowa City Community School District, where she remained until her retirement in the year 2000. Sue was employed at a wide variety of schools, some of which are the Lemme, Lincoln, and Hoover Elementary Schools in addition to the Southeast Junior High School and the Board Office. During her time working for the school district, she forged numerous friendships that would last a lifetime.
She spent her retirement years loving traveling with her husband and friends to various areas all over the world, and she was a member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Iowa City. The church is located in Iowa City. Some of our most memorable vacations have been spent in Hawaii, Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Iceland, South America, the Galapagos Islands, and on a number of river cruises around Europe. Sue also volunteered for a significant amount of time at St. Mary’s and Mercy Hospital, where she assisted with the preparation and serving of funeral dinners and provided assistance in the offices of both institutions.
Sue was a person who was incredibly considerate and loving, and she always put the needs of others before her own. She was a wonderful hostess and enjoyed entertaining guests through activities such as playing cards, staying active, visiting her grandchildren’s activities, crocheting, and exercising. Sue developed a lifetime love of animals as a result of her upbringing on a farm, and she adored having pets in her home.
Her husband, Fred, of Iowa City; daughter Denise (Michael) Gannon of Coralville; son Kelly (Ann) of Iowa City; eight grandchildren, Rachael, Jacob (fiance Kelly Schumer), Maria (Lucas Koester), Jonathan, and James Gannon; and Erin, Leigh, and Gwyneth Durian; and one brother, Richard (Sandra) Paul are among her surviving family members. She is also survived by one brother. Mary Lu Paul, Bill (Janet) Durian, Rosemary Humphreys, Nick (Arlene) Durian, Duane (Judy) Durian, Mary Ellen (Jerry) Jones, Jerry (Diane) Durian, Joe (Sue) Durian, Jim (Val) Durian, and Celeste (Kim) Croskrey are some of Sue’s sister and brother in-laws who are still alive and well.
