by Jean Derrick Obituary, Death – It has left me with a deep sense of loss to learn that Jean Derrick passed away as the result of an accident involving horses yesterday. Those who were fortunate enough to have known Jean can attest to the fact that she was not only a well-respected member of the South Carolina legal community but also a loyal friend.
During a challenging time in my life, Jean was there to offer unflinching support and encouragement, and I will be eternally grateful to her for both of those things. In the wake of my father’s passing, she was a genuine comfort to me, and through our mutual love of horses and riding, we formed a strong friendship with one another.
She greeted me with wide arms and kindness when I joined the quest, and she taught me to blossom no matter where God plants you in the world. I discovered relief from the pain of my loss in the pursuit of a lifetime ambition while I was flying first flight with Field Master Jean. Those recollections of going foxhunting will always have a special and loved place in my heart. Jean exemplified so many aspects of what I aspire to achieve in my life, including being a talented lawyer, an expert horsewoman, and a selfless teacher.
During my time as a student, I frequently found myself drawn to the study room on the third floor of the Law Library that carries her name on a plaque. Her support and advice played a significant role in my decision to pursue a career in law, and I am grateful to her for that. The loss of Jean has created a hole in our lives that can never be replaced. However, her legacy will continue to live on via the people whose lives she touched and the lessons she taught. Rest in peace, dear friend.
